Looks Like a Family Car, Drives Like a Sportscar – The Audi S5 Sportback Is a Super Sleeper!

Introduction

In a market where flashy SUVs and sedans dominate conversations, the Audi S5 Sportback presents itself as a different kind of performance car—sharp, sophisticated, and subtly aggressive. I spent a few days with this German beauty, and it didn't take long for me to realize that this isn’t just another fast Audi—it’s a well-rounded machine that blends power, style, and everyday practicality with finesse.

Driving Experience & Design

From the outside, the S5 Sportback carries a confident presence without being too loud. The fastback profile gives it an elegant edge, and with the Platinum Edition’s dark accents, stylish alloy wheels, and sleek LED lighting, it commands attention without needing to shout.

Inside, Audi’s commitment to craftsmanship is on full display. The cabin is both sporty and plush—premium Nappa leather seats with contrast stitching, clean dashboard layout, carbon fibre details, and a 3D surround system from Bang & Olufsen that transforms the cabin into a sound studio. The Virtual Cockpit Plus and infotainment setup are intuitive and crisp, with smooth transitions and minimal distractions.

On the road is where the S5 truly earns its badge. A 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine puts out 354 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, and paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive, this car moves like a well-trained athlete. Whether you’re crawling through urban traffic or opening it up on the highway, the acceleration is seamless, and the exhaust has a sporty growl that’s addictive but never obnoxious.

The real charm is its dual nature—it's comfortable enough for daily commutes, yet instantly responsive when you decide to push it. Steering is direct, and the suspension manages to smoothen out most Indian road imperfections, though sharper bumps do make their presence felt.

Pros

  • Strong Performance: The turbo V6 delivers impressive acceleration with smooth power delivery.

  • Everyday Usability: Sportback design means more rear-seat space and boot practicality than a traditional coupe.

  • Premium Interior: High-grade materials, tech-rich interface, and excellent build quality throughout.

  • Refined Ride Quality: Offers a comfortable drive for city use and tight handling when you want fun.

  • Subtle Styling: Ideal for those who prefer elegance over excess.

Cons

  • Expensive: With an on-road price pushing close to ₹1 crore, it's a big investment.

  • Rear Headroom: The sloping roofline looks great but slightly eats into rear passenger space.

  • Less Flashy Than RS Models: Some enthusiasts might prefer a louder, more dramatic appearance.

How It Stacks Up Against Rivals

In terms of competition, the BMW M340i xDrive is the S5’s closest rival, offering slightly more aggressive dynamics and a louder personality, but it lacks the S5’s sleek Sportback design and cabin refinement. The Mercedes-AMG C43 brings similar power with a more flamboyant flair but often at a higher price point.

If you're looking for the perfect middle ground between luxury, practicality, and spirited driving in the ₹85–100 lakh bracket—the BMW M340i is more of a sleeper and might be mistaken as a normal 3 series but the S5 Sportback will definitely turn more heads as there's nothing anything like it, and definitely can't be mistaken for a A4.

Verdict

The Audi S5 Sportback Platinum Edition is a niche car—but one that nails its purpose. It’s quick without being brutal, stylish without being flashy, and practical without sacrificing the fun. For someone who wants a genuinely engaging car that also fits into a professional lifestyle or family routine, this version of the S5 hits all the right notes.
